Foldable smartphones are getting on track once again. Few years ago, the unveiling of the Moto Z Force in the market has introduced the innovation for smartphone industries. Now, we will unlock the Huawei Mate X!
The recent Mobile World Congress 2019, one of the world’s largest events for the mobile industry, showcased all innovations of the leading smartphone companies. At this point, one smartphone overshadowed everything in the congress.
Mate X
This particular smartphone has brought all the curious minds on its deck. With a solid-feeling hinge, it can transform from 6.6-inch and 6.38-inch phone into full 8-inch Android tablet. Powered by new Kirin 980 chipset and a capacity of 4,500 mAh backing it up, we can now experience the new foldable smartphone – Huawei Mate X.
You read it right. A foldable smartphone will be available in the market sometime in June, July or August 2019. The official launch date will depend on the completion of its research team and reaching the full capability of the foldable smartphone. The releasing of Huawei Mate X has now given a tight competition on Samsung Galaxy Fold.
However, the launching of Huawei Mate X is only in UK. For now, Huawei has no plans on launching its Mate X in the United States. The cost of Huawei Mate X with 512GB internal storage and 8GB of RAM is €2,299 ($2,600, £2,000, AU$4,770). If you have limitations on this one, you might want to wait for the other variants that Huawei will offer down the line.
So, how does a foldable smartphone works?
At first, we can see its transformation from 6.6 inches to a tablet size of 8 inches full display. By pressing the button at the back, it will release the black portion of the smartphone, unfolding to its full display. Isn’t it amazing? Well, Huawei Mate X excelled on this part compared to Samsung Galaxy Fold with only 4.6 inches.
The 8-inch full display of Huawei Mate X let us experience to watch 21:9 movies in our phones, activating smallest displays without heavy bezel outlines. Huawei Mate X has screen OLED display. OLED display enables the unused pixels remaining pitch black. As compared the LCD displays, OLED illuminated whole panel simultaneously. In this state, power consumption will be at its max because of illuminated unused pixels. Huawei took advantage to OLED technology that it became part of the core design of Mate X, a power-saving feature.
How durable it is?
There are dilemmas on the Huawei Mate X. Since it is a foldable smartphone, how fragile it is?
Huawei used the Falcon Wing hinge system that will enable the screen to bend and have a complete flush fold anytime. Before its preliminary launching in MWC 2019, Huawei have undergone the Mate X 100,000 folds in lab-condition stress tests. They developed a protective case to ensure that it will not be damaged.
The durability of Mate X will go through more tests and challenges in its feature on hardness. On this aspect, Samsung Galaxy Fold excelled in which the Galaxy Fold will be harder than the Mate X because of its less display and glass exposure as outer screen.
Huawei told that there will be more improvements for Mate X before launching few months from now. Such as the feature of clasp system used to keep the screen firmly flush when the phone while folded mode. This is one of the main concerns that Mate X owners will find difficult to handle in the future.
How does its camera works?
Like other smartphones, cameras are one of the primary concerns.
Huawei Mate X camera is a triple-module system which can only be found at the back. There has no front camera and this fact will be a disappointment to smartphone users.
Huawei did not purposely take the satisfaction to smartphone users taking selfies for Instagrams and other social media. The rear screen doubles up as a viewfinder, making your selfies more convenient. On the other hand, if you want to see a preview when someone is taking your picture, you might want to use the second screen of your phone. To make it simple, a live view of what’s in frame appeared on both sides of the folded phone, so both the picture taker and picky person who asked a stranger to take their photo can see everything.
Just remember that rear cameras can always capture the moments perfectly. Though, Huawei Mate X has not yet build-in the camera with megapixels size or aperture details. Camera with more megapixels can be found in Huawei P30 smartphone to be launched at the end of March 2019.
At the rear left screen of Huawei is a vertical bar. This encompasses the brains of the operation, from triple-camera system through to the power button/fingerprint scanner combo. The USB-C port for charging can be found at the base.
How long its battery life can lasts?
The battery life span of Huawei Mate X is a total of 4,500mAh, a combination of two batteries.
Since it is a foldable smartphone, basically the phone needs more power to enable its 8 inches full display. The charging time of Mate X can reach up to 85% from 0% in just 30 minutes, thanks to Huawei’s 55W Super Charge technology. This has exceeded its own Mate 20 Pro with only 40W Super Charge technology.
As Huawei unveiled their Mate X, the Samsung Galaxy Fold was noticeably left behind.
How fast the performance and connectivity?
The foldable smartphone does not only charge at a high-speed. With the power of Kiring 980 processor coupled with a Balong 5000 5G modem, it just took three seconds to download a 1GB movie.
Huawei technology in making the Mate X paves the way for the future-proofed from a data transfer speed point of view. Mate X 512GB storage can be support and expand additional storage up to 256GB by using Nano Memory card, a Huawei’s proprietary storage card.
According to Richard Yu, you can ideally suited the Huawei Mate X to Bluetooth connect with mouse and keyboard to get more convenience in document editing, writing reports, and responding to emails. This is possible because Mate X has customized version of Android. It enables the folding and unfolding from tablet to phone, or vice versa, by optimizing the interfaces in milliseconds.
Huawei’s custom skin above Android, the EMUI, is the center of everything in Mate X features. Together with its OS, it unlocked the split-screen multitasking equivalent to a tablet display.
