The latest of the Lenovo ThinkPad series has the supreme capability to operate at the highest speed.

Marketing competitions between desktops and laptops are not a threat to any manufacturer. It only serves an opportunity for them to upgrade each model with the latest and most advanced technologies available.

Usually, a buyer considers the price and performance between desktops and laptops before deciding what to buy. Of course, you cannot compare both similarly because of each distinct physical specification. However, there are laptops which have almost the same performance as compared to desktops in the market. You must take a closer look and dig deeper into each laptop manufacturer.

It has the 8th-generation Intel Core i7 CPU, a 6-core and 12-threaded silicon beast. It is compatible with the NVMe storage, and 2400MHz DDR4 RAM. To experience the full graphical capacity of this outstanding ThinkPad series, Lenovo uses the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. It is partnered with Max-Q technology and 4GB of dedicated DDR5 memory.

And there can only be a single laptop that can offer this promising performance – the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme.

What does Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme offer?

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme may be the right one for you with its most advanced and powerful features. You may know its specifications, but this is just a warm-up of everything that what the ThinkPad X1 can offer.

Having a 6-core processor, ThinkPad X1 Extreme only requires a single core to exceed the performance of other portable computers. It enables us to accomplish the majority of office computing tasks. The other five cores have been allocated to manage the rest of the world. Isn’t it marvelous?

Take note of the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which was in the ThinkPad X1 Extreme system. The ability of the GeForce GTX 1015 Ti is what makes this laptop to operate smoothly. However, it is not advisable to use the ThinkPad X1 Extreme as gaming portable. But what Lenovo wanted to emphasize is that every laptop that they have built has specific characteristics which will respond to the needs of the laptop owners.

For ThinkPad X1 Extreme, this laptop is not suitable for a 4K gaming frame rates, but it has served its purpose. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme is the frontline in most of the business that requires those graphical powers. You can use it for design and layout works such as CAD, light 3D modeling and presentation tasks in engineering and architectural firms.

Battery Life

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme has the supreme power above any of other laptops. It can only maintain its operating window not longer than for 4 hours and 21 minutes, unplugged. Unlike other laptops manufacturers, such as Dell and Toshiba Portégé, they can last longer than Lenovo ThinkPad. Why is that so? As we have compared the specifications of the three laptops, Dell and Toshiba has a1080p screen and do not have GeForce GPU in their systems. As to Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme, it has the speed of NVMe drive in combination with the processor and chipset. Thus, power consumption is at its max.

The physical appearance of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme battery is 50% bigger than other laptops. It has a four-cell Li-Polymer 80WHr battery, which is genuinely a consideration for its system operation. So, there is no excuse about the size of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme battery.

Performance of ThinkPad X1 Extreme

Other may still have doubts on the speed performance of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme. For the benefit of the doubt, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme internal drive has a speed of over 3,300 MBps and writing at 2,400 MBps. Other laptops cannot achieve it with Intel UHD 630 GPU with 350 MBps. It is just 15% of what Lenovo’s system can attain.

If you are not satisfied with the internal drive speed of GeForce GPU, you should try to install another NVME drive and RAID stripe. It will double those numbers and reach the ultimate storage.

Screen Display

Besides the specifications and performance of the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme, you can see the exquisite appearance is emphasized.

The ThinkPad X1 Extreme has a 15.6-inch screen with 4K resolution. The pixels are microscopic; hence, the screen display must be in 250% scales to make it practical to use. The color representation is both 100% RGB and 100% Adobe RGB rated gamut and sports up to 400 nits backlighting. It makes ThinkPad X1 exceptional from other laptops. Is it unbelievable?  Well, to apprehend our uncertainties, the color schematics of the ThinkPad X1 Extreme screen have been undergone in a Data Spyder 5 calibrator. The calibration results on ThinkPad X1 Extreme screen specs are correct and have reached 350 nits at its brightest reading.

This is one of the advantages that the ThinkPad X1 Extreme. It is highly recommended for architectural and engineering firms or any industries with graphics and layout jobs.

4K Resolution

On the other hand, you will be puzzled if the 4K resolution has any difference from 1080p. Lenovo admitted that laptop owners would have difficulty in identifying the difference. For you to see it clearly, you must run a 4K video stream or use an application to test the 4k full resolution.

Market Value

After almost getting the whole picture of the specifications and performance, let us take a look at the price of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme.

The ThinkPad X1 Extreme is available across the country.  If you want to have a hold on the ThinkPad X1 Extreme with Core i7 CPU, you need $2,834 (£2,679.99 including VAT). You want the Core i5 (no discrete GPU, 8GB RAM, 256GB of NVMe storage and a 1080 non-touch display). For this one, you need to set aside $1,673 (£1,619.99).

The price of Core i5 compared to Core i7 is not a sales strategy. It is not a part of any scheme in marketing aspects. We can see the difference in the specs, and we can predict the limitations of a laptop with a Core i5 system.

Exclusively, Lenovo offers a limited edition for its US customers. You can buy for about $3,200 the Intel Core i7-8850H 6-core processor with vPro (2.60GHz, up to 4.30GHz with Turbo, 9MB Cache). We can imagine how a ThinkPad X1 Extreme can work having these fantastic specs of the operating system.

The Lenovo sets the standards that buying this laptop consider high-quality technology is priceless. When it comes to ThinkPad, its philosophy is never to offer anything too radical. The priority in ThinkPad is not in the style or appearance; therefore, the X1 Extreme will have the same branding and black color scheme. Lenovo focuses on internal development and enhancement rather than presentation outside.

Look and Feel

The physical appearance of Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme consists of a combination of the four-layer carbon-fiber surface with an aluminum alloy lower chassis that will serve as a highly durable shell. Easy access on all the connectors along the sides, as well as the buttons and ports,  are all labeled clearly. The keyboard and touchpad are large and very responsive which makes the ThinkPad X1 Extreme user-friendly. You can adapt easily even for those unfamiliar with the features of Lenovo ThinkPad series.

But even for a laptop with advanced technology, there are still downsides. Lenovo owners’ experience that they lost track of mouse pointer easily even on a standard scale. Also, the ThinkPad X1 Extreme is more massive than other ordinary laptops. This may be a downside for the weight of 1.84 kilograms. But, it serves its purpose to provide the speed of the operating system. You cannot expect that with the given specifications in ThinkPad X1 Extreme, it can be light as a feather. In fact, it is not the heaviest ThinkPad model of Lenovo. The ThinkPad X1 Extreme is lighter than Lenovo T580.

Keyboard

The keyboard in ThinkPad is different from other laptops with conventional keyboard logic. In ThinkPad series, the Function key is on the far left of the bottom row.  However, in other laptops, the key on the far-left bottom row is control (CTRL) key. As for the new ThinkPad owners, this will be confusing for a few weeks. Desktop users who use conventional keyboard might take longer times to be familiarized on the keyboard layout in ThinkPad.

Exhaust System

The exhaust system of ThinkPad can be heard from the moment that you power on the laptop. Even other laptops with the fastest operating system have limitations. It depends on the capability of the fan installed on the laptop. For the ThinkPad X1 Extreme, the fan spinning at maximum speed requires the GPU to be fully occupied. This can only happen at a time and not in constant while using the ThinkPad.

USB Port Allocations

The port allocations are excellent with two full Thunderbolt 3 connectors. You can install the power connector properly so it will not fall out easily. Unlike other laptops, charging can be disrupted because of the loose power connector. This is an advantage for the ThinkPad X1 Extreme because it needs up to 2.5 hours to fully charge.

When connecting to the internet, ThinkPad can connect wireless and by using Ethernet port. It seems to be unusual that Lenovo had set-up a network extension port and a small adapter to convert Ethernet. An incident may happen that the adapter will be lost and sadly, it cannot be replaced easily except Lenovo directly.

Security Protocols

Windows Hello fully supports the ThinkPad X1 Extreme with IR camera. It came along with a Match-on-Chip touch fingerprint reader and a smart card. These are optional for those who prefer security protocols.

Upgrade

If you want more satisfaction before owning ThinkPad X1 Extreme, you can upgrade its current specifications. You can switch the 32GB of RAM and boost to 64GB by changing the two modules for larger capacity. The NVMe drive can raise internal storage from 8TB to 16TB by using the Samsung NF1. However, this upgrade can cost you more than the base cost of the system. Also, it will shorten the lifespan of your battery since updates on the operating system will consume more battery consumption.

Our Say:

For Lenovo, ThinkPad laptops will provide the laptop owners that tools that they need. According to Lenovo, ThinkPad has the technology from high-end processing and graphics to cutting-edge touchscreen, from pen support to epic battery life.

Indeed, Lenovo is a bit pricey as compared to other laptops. However, it has the ability to perform and meet the needs of the customers who want to have an on-the-go desktop computer. ThinkPad X1 Extreme is a high-performance laptop that can support the majority of tasks, making the price reasonable.

It may not look appealing outside. But what good it is when physical appearance is astonishing while the performance is weak and getting busted in the middle of your work. This is what Lenovo considers always, and knows the importance of owning a laptop. It is not because of physical appearance. But, it is because of the performance which could lead you to have a productive and meaningful day.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme is literally extreme during the unveiling to the public. It challenges other laptop and desktop manufacturers to develop their product and be equivalent to their innovations.

Lenovo will not stop to push on their research and development for new laptop models. Coming out with ThinkPad X1 Extreme is just the beginning of ThinkPad series enthusiasm in the market.
